I decided for my first cosplay attempt, I would go with something a little simplistic. Therefore, I thought the Blu Spy from Team Fortress 2(the online, multi-player game by Valve) would be a nice choice. Spy has a fairly straightforward outfit, and all his “accessories” are small and somewhat generically-shaped, and, best of all, I match his body proportions and height fairly well (I think, based on my observations during game-play).
So… I started gathering my props: a blue pinstripe suit, a cigarette case, an old watch, some cardboard and glue. Things started off fine. I was able to alter the suit with no real problems. As I moved onto the Spytron 3000 (the cigarette case), things started to become more difficult. Then, when I began construction of the trademark butterfly knife, more difficult still. By the time I got to the Electro-Sapper, I only had two weeks left before the con, and I was exhausted… and wondering why I ever thought this cosplay would be simple. However, I did manage to pull everything together (all except the revolver… I just ran out of time), and I am fairly happy with the final result. You be the judge.
In this pic, I made the Spytron 3000(purchased a metal cigarette case, then crafted the inside of matte board and plastic), the Electro-Sapper (cardboard, foam board, and plastic with purchased toggles), the Invisibility watch (gutted “vintage” watch with matte board and plastic crafting), and the Butterfly Knife (wood, paper, and bookbinding screws… and yes, it does flip open and closed!). I also rolled my own cigarettes (out of wood and paper… not what some of you deviants were probably guessing… *snicker*…) and printed off some masks for fun. (The rest in the pic, hat, gloves, and pocket watch, I did not craft myself.)
This is just a sample pic. I now have some better shots of all my props and myself in full costume up, with more accompanying info on the making-of each individual prop and costume piece.
Oh, and, yes, I do play Team Fortress, most of the time as the Spy… and I SUCK! I once got killed just 3 seconds after leaving respawn. 3 SECONDS! #*! % Pyros!!!
